Basketball legend Charles Barkley has not held back in criticizing Joel Embiid’s performance for Team USA. The Philadelphia 76ers star has been under fire for his lackluster showing in the lead-up to the Paris Olympics.
Barkley, known for his outspoken nature, took aim at Embiid’s preparation and conditioning. During an appearance on the “Podcast P” show, the Hall of Famer suggested that Embiid’s fitness levels are subpar and might be a contributing factor to his underwhelming play.
“I think that’s one of the reasons he’s always injured,” Barkley said. “I don’t think he’s in good enough shape. You got to be a little bit embarrassed by the way you played.”
Embiid has faced criticism for his slow starts to seasons, and it seems his sluggishness has carried over to the international stage. Despite being a reigning MVP, the Cameroonian center has found himself behind Anthony Davis and Bam Adebayo in the rotation.
Barkley’s comments have reignited the debate about Embiid’s overall impact and whether he can consistently perform at an elite level. As the Olympics approach, all eyes will be on the big man to see if he can silence his critics.
