Paul Pierce Slams Larry Bird Over Luka Dončić Comments: Calls Out His Tyler Hansbrough Blunder, Questions His Franchise Player Judgment, and Declares Jayson Tatum as Superior

Boston Celtics legend Paul Pierce has never been one to hold back his opinions, and his latest target is none other than fellow Celtics icon Larry Bird. The outspoken former NBA champion blasted Bird over his recent comments naming Luka Dončić as his ideal franchise player, questioning Bird’s ability to properly evaluate talent and making a bold case for Jayson Tatum as the clear superior choice.

Pierce: “Bird Doesn’t Know How to Pick a Franchise Player”

Larry Bird, a three-time NBA champion and one of the most revered figures in basketball history, recently made headlines by stating that if he were coaching an NBA team, he would build around Luka Dončić. While many view Dončić as a generational talent, Pierce was far from impressed with Bird’s assessment.

“Larry might be one of the greatest to ever play, but that doesn’t mean he knows how to pick an ideal franchise player,” Pierce said. “He should know better, especially when we got Tatum right here in Boston leading this team every single night.”

Pierce strongly believes that Tatum is miles ahead of Dončić, not just in terms of individual performance, but in his ability to lead a winning team.

“Tatum has been the best player on the best team all season,” Pierce continued. “This guy is playing like an MVP, leading Boston to the top. And we’re out here talking about Luka? Come on, man.”

Pierce Calls Out Bird’s Infamous Tyler Hansbrough Blunder

Not stopping there, Pierce took direct aim at Bird’s history of talent evaluation, specifically bringing up the Tyler Hansbrough draft debacle when Bird was the Indiana Pacers’ President of Basketball Operations.

“Let’s not forget, this man made Tyler Hansbrough a lottery pick. Everyone else in the NBA knew Hansbrough was junk,” Pierce mocked. “So maybe Bird ain’t the guy to be talking about picking the perfect franchise player.”

For those who don’t remember, Hansbrough was selected 13th overall by the Pacers in the 2009 NBA Draft, a pick that raised eyebrows even at the time. While Hansbrough had a dominant college career at North Carolina, his NBA potential was widely questioned, and he never lived up to expectations, spending most of his career as a role player.

“Tatum is Way Ahead of Luka” – Pierce Declares the Obvious

Pierce concluded his rant by doubling down on his belief that Jayson Tatum is the superior franchise player over Luka Dončić, citing Tatum’s two-way impact, leadership, and winning mentality as key reasons why Bird’s opinion is flawed.

“Look, Luka is great, no doubt. But if you’re asking me who I’d build my team around? It’s Tatum, easy,” Pierce said. “He’s a better defender, he’s carried the Celtics all season, and he’s showing up on national TV proving he’s the best. Bird should be saying Tatum is his ideal franchise guy, not Luka.”

Pierce’s fiery comments are bound to stir debate among NBA fans, especially in the ongoing Tatum vs. Dončić discussions. While both players are among the league’s elite, Pierce is making it clear: If Bird truly knew how to build a team, he’d be picking Tatum, not Luka.
