Brock Purdy will not play against the Rams; the 49ers have revealed the quarterback who will take his place

Carson Wentz will start against the 49ers instead of Matthew Stafford, the Rams announced earlier today. Los Angeles will be seeded sixth or seventh in the postseason, depending on the outcome of Sunday’s game.

“Brock’s the only guy for sure I know I don’t plan on playing,” he said.

That means Sam Darnold will get the start against the Rams. However, this does not imply that the 49ers will give Purdy the entire week off.

“Brock, we’re treating this as a normal week,” Shanahan explained. “Since it’s a normal Wednesday at this time of year, we’re going half-speed on everything.” We don’t do anything fast this time of year.

Wednesday. Brock will get half of the ones reps. Sam will receive the remaining [half].

“I want our team to treat this week like Brock collapsing on the first play of the game.” That is why I want them both to represent it. I’d like Brock to get some work this week, and that’s something I’d like us to be prepared for if that happens.

“On Thursday, when everything is at full speed, I’ll probably give Sam the majority of [practice reps].” We’ll discuss it after today. And then it’s back to walk-through on Friday.”

Shanahan also mentioned that defensive tackle Arik Armstead (foot, knee), running back Christian McCaffrey (calf), tight end Ross Dwelley (ankle), guard Jon Feliciano (back), cornerback Ambry Thomas (hand), and safety Tashaun Gipson (ankle) were all out.
