The San Francisco 49ers mutual Brock Purdy-Sam Darnold fan club was in full swing this week ahead of the season finale against the Rams, where Darnold will make his first start of the season. the equipment decided to rest Purdy before the finals. Purdy earned it — not only is he an MVP candidate, but he was a Pro Bowl selection in his second NFL season here.
But Purdy knows Week 18 is all about Darnold, and speaking to reporters this week, he expressed his gratitude for how Darnold has encouraged him all year, helping him learn to study opponents and see the inside of the game. a broader perspective.
“Obviously he’s been a guy that’s been here in the league, I think it’s his sixth year,” Purdy said in his weekly press conference. “Just the process, the routine, how to learn what he sees from the concepts and how he’s done things in the past. He was able to penetrate me and help me through this. … He brings those little things that are huge for me as a quarterback.
“Obviously and other things, he only points out good things, trends in film that they could do during the game, which should not be overlooked. So he did a tremendous job. He is a very devoted guy. He puts the team first. He’s for the room, not just for himself or anything like that. The guy is from the room and this organization, so I’m very thankful he got him.“
Brock Purdy: “It was sweet”
Of course, one of the reasons Darnold signed with the 49ers in the offseason was that San Francisco. there was still some uncertainty about what starting quarterback Brock Purdy would do. It looks like something. Purdy suffered an elbow injury in the NFC Championship Game last January that required surgery and had just five regular season starts. But Purdy came back this year and won MVP. This includes during games.
“Servants, we all sit next to each other and when Griese is done talking, Sam and Brandon talk about everything, thinking and stuff,” Purdy said. “They’re real about what’s going on, what the situation is and where I should be. Again, they remind me of the things I can do because they’ve played the position. They’ve been in those moments.
“So it was great to have them with me and keep them going.“
Sam Darnold’s 49ers performance could prompt free agency.
There’s no doubt that at 26 years old and now through three organizations in his short NFL career, Darnold still wants to be a starting quarterback. That’s not going to happen in San Francisco as long as there’s a guy named Brock Purdy around.
But again, week 18 vs. the rams are sam darnold’s show and that should largely determine how many opportunities he gets elsewhere next season. Even if it ends up being a backup, Darnold said he learned a lot from serving Purdy in that role.
“Brock is just in terms of the process he goes through to prepare for the game, he studies a lot and he’s very careful about it,” Darnold said. “And just how he reads the defense, he does exactly what he’s been taught to do. ... He stays inside better than any quarterback I’ve been around, given what the defense gives him, and obviously it’s time and place to be aggressive. and try to throw, but I think he’s very ready in certain situations. just watch the ball and live to fight another day.“.
