Georgia Bulldogs Set to Unveil Statue Honoring Matthew Stafford for His Legacy and Contribution
Athens, GA – June 2025
In a move that celebrates both talent and legacy, the University of Georgia has announced plans to unveil a statue of former Bulldogs quarterback Matthew Stafford, recognizing his lasting impact on the program and the school’s football tradition.
The bronze statue, which will be placed outside Sanford Stadium, honors Stafford not only for his on-field brilliance but for his unwavering connection to the university throughout his professional career.
A Bulldog Through and Through
Matthew Stafford, who played for Georgia from 2006 to 2008, left an indelible mark on the program. Known for his cannon-like arm, calm leadership, and football IQ beyond his years, Stafford amassed over 7,700 passing yards and 51 touchdowns in his college career. He helped guide the Bulldogs to a Sugar Bowl victory in 2008 and was widely regarded as one of the most pro-ready quarterbacks in college football history.
He was selected No. 1 overall in the 2009 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions, becoming one of Georgia’s most celebrated professional exports.
Legacy Cemented in Bronze
The statue, which depicts Stafford in full throwing motion in his iconic No. 7 jersey, captures the quarterback’s signature poise under pressure. It will join a growing tradition of honoring Bulldogs legends, alongside Herschel Walker and potential future honorees like Stetson Bennett.
“Matthew Stafford helped elevate Georgia football on a national scale,” said UGA athletic director Josh Brooks. “His loyalty, leadership, and performance made him more than a great quarterback — he’s a true Bulldog icon. This statue will remind generations of fans what excellence looks like.”
Beyond the Gridiron
Since leaving Athens, Stafford has enjoyed a successful NFL career, including a Super Bowl victory with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. Despite his success at the professional level, he has remained connected to UGA, often giving back to the program and speaking highly of his time in Athens.
“I’m incredibly honored,” Stafford said in a statement. “Georgia shaped me not only as a football player but as a person. I’m proud to be a Dawg for life.”
Unveiling Ceremony
The university plans to unveil the statue in a special ceremony this fall ahead of a key home game. Former teammates, coaches, fans, and Stafford himself are expected to attend. The event will celebrate not just the statue, but the golden era of Georgia football that Stafford helped usher in.
Dawg Nation Rejoices
For many fans, this statue is long overdue. Matthew Stafford may not have won a Heisman or national title in college, but his leadership, character, and legacy make him one of the most revered Bulldogs of the modern era.
With the unveiling, Georgia isn’t just honoring a player — it’s enshrining a legacy that helped redefine the quarterback position in Athens.
