University of Oregon Ducks to Honor Marcus Mariota with Commemorative Statue
Eugene, OR — In a long-awaited tribute to one of the greatest players in program history, the University of Oregon has announced it will unveil a statue of Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota outside Autzen Stadium. The monument will commemorate Mariota’s extraordinary achievements and lasting legacy in Oregon Ducks football.
Marcus Mariota, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, redefined the quarterback position at Oregon with a rare combination of speed, precision, humility, and leadership. From 2012 to 2014, he led the Ducks to unprecedented heights, including a national championship game appearance and a victory in the 2015 Rose Bowl. His crowning achievement came in 2014 when he became the first—and still only—Oregon player to win the Heisman Trophy.
“Marcus Mariota represents everything we strive for at Oregon,” said Oregon Athletic Director Rob Mullens. “He’s not just one of the most electrifying athletes to ever wear a Ducks uniform—he’s a world-class human being who carried himself with grace and humility on and off the field. His impact on this program and this university will be felt for generations.”
The statue, which will be placed prominently near the entrance of Autzen Stadium, will depict Mariota in his iconic green and yellow uniform, mid-stride, evoking the speed and poise that defined his style of play. It will be unveiled in a special ceremony during the upcoming football season, with Mariota and his family expected to attend.
During his collegiate career, Mariota threw for over 10,000 yards, rushed for more than 2,200 yards, and accounted for 105 total touchdowns. But beyond the numbers, it was Mariota’s leadership and quiet confidence that inspired teammates and elevated the Ducks into a national powerhouse. Under his guidance, Oregon became a consistent top-5 program and helped change the perception of West Coast college football.
Mariota has continued to represent Oregon with pride in the NFL and through his philanthropic work in Hawaii and beyond. His Motiv8 Foundation, which supports underserved youth, has helped countless children access resources and opportunities.
“To have a statue here at a place that shaped who I am is incredibly humbling,” Mariota said in a statement. “Oregon is family. I share this honor with all my teammates, coaches, and everyone who believed in a kid from Hawaii. Mahalo.”
For Ducks fans, the statue is more than just a tribute to an elite athlete—it’s a symbol of a golden era in Oregon football and the enduring power of character, leadership, and excellence.
