Chelsea reintroduces a ten-year-old transfer target as potential reinforcement

Simon Phillips has today released a really interesting update on his Substack about Chelsea’s January transfer plans, including a focus on our left back search.

Ben Chilwell has just returned from injury which eases our immediate need, but with Marc Cucurella out injured and Ian Maatsen leaving, there is going to be a gap there long term if we want Levi Colwill to move into the centre.

Phillips suggests that a lot of interesting options are being looked at – Chelsea fan and target of yesteryear (it’s ten years since he was first linked!) Luke Shaw is in there, as is Man City’s Sergio Gomez, who has not played a lot for Pep Guardiola’s first team. You can also apparently add Chelsea to the list of teams interested in Fulham’s Antonee Robinson.

All of those are expensive senior options though – we can’t see them coming in unless Cucurella is sold, something which isn’t going to happen until the summer at the very earliest given his injury situation
