Michigan Adds Five-Star Point Guard, Strengthening Already Elite 2026 Class
Michigan’s run to the national championship game wasn’t the only reason for Wolverines fans to celebrate this weekend. While the team was dominating Arizona in the Final Four, a five-star recruit announced his commitment to the program. Brandon McCoy, a 6-foot-5 guard from Sierra Canyon in California, pledged to Michigan during an alternate broadcast of the game featuring former Wolverine stars[reference:0].
McCoy is rated the No. 14 overall prospect in the 2026 class by the 247Sports composite[reference:1]. He has evolved into one of the most physically imposing guards in the class, with scouting director Adam Finkelstein calling him “one of the very best defenders in the class” and someone who plays “with a lot of sheer force” on offense[reference:2].
McCoy’s final list included Michigan, Miami, Alabama, and Arkansas, and he turned down a majority of Power Four schools, including Duke and Arizona[reference:3][reference:4]. He cited head coach Dusty May’s vision as a key factor. “Coach May’s vision lined up with my vision and dreams, which are to become a pro and stay in the league long term,” McCoy told ESPN. “He said I could fill up a stat sheet, play winning basketball, be an elite defender and play multiple positions”[reference:5].
## A Class on the Rise
McCoy is the sixth member of Michigan’s 2026 recruiting class, joining power forward Quinn Costello (No. 31 in the composite), small forwards Malachi Brown and Lincoln Cosby (No. 38), shooting guard Joseph Hartman (No. 79), and seven-foot-three Danish center Marcus Moller[reference:6]. The class is currently ranked No. 3 in the country and is expected to climb into the top two following McCoy’s commitment[reference:7].
The addition of a five-star point guard fills a critical need for the Wolverines, who will be without guard L.J. Cason next year after he tore his ACL in late February. Starting point guard Elliot Cadeau and key reserve guard Trey McKenney are expected to return, while starters Yaxel Lendeborg and Nimari Burnett are out of eligibility[reference:8].
## The Big Picture
Dusty May has now built a top-three recruiting class while leading his team to the national championship game. The Wolverines will face UConn on Monday night for the title, and the future in Ann Arbor has never looked brighter. With McCoy in the fold, Michigan is poised to remain a powerhouse in the Big Ten and beyond.
