Green Bay Packers head coach Matt LaFleur may have lost faith in the football gods after his team’s 24-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. The Packers had fans at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif., preparing for an upset of the hometown 49ers for most of the divisional round play.
Green Bay led 21-14 in the fourth quarter. However, the game turned on its head when Packers kicker Anders Carlson missed a 41-yard field goal with more than six minutes left.
After the hit, FOX reporter Tom Rinaldi shared a comment LaFleur made about Carlson before the game. The Packers coach admitted he sought help from a higher power to help his struggling starting kicker.
“When we talked to head coach Matt LaFleur [about Carlson’s struggles], he basically said, ‘If he goes out, I’m just going to pray and number” Rinaldi quoted LaFleur as saying.
LaFleur’s pleas went unanswered .This time
A successful punt by Carlson, who led the NFL in sacks this season, would have given Green Bay a 24-17 lead. Instead, the 49ers hit the game-winning field goal to secure a spot in the NFC Championship Game.
The 49ers also managed to end Kyle Shanahan’s rather shocking streak. Despite coach LaFleur’s pleas, his Niners counterpart simply enjoyed the favor of the football gods..
