John Higgins warmed up for his attempt to win a record sixth Welsh Open title next week by becoming the oldest man in history to make a maximum 147 break at the Championship League in Leicester on Saturday. Higgins won Group 5 of the popular invitational event, closing the gap on his old rival Ronnie O’Sullivan on the sport’s all-time career maximum list.
On Saturday, John Higgins became the oldest player in history to score a maximum in the Championship League, closing in on snooker GOAT Ronnie O’Sullivan by two career 147 breaks.
The four-time world champion compiled the stunning break in the first frame of his 3-2 win over Fan Zhengyi in the semi-finals of Group 5 at the invitational tournament,
Walden won the second frame with a 122 break, but Higgins scored 69 in the third, leaving his opponent without a point in the final two frames.
“I felt good throughout the break and wanted it from the start,” Higgins said of his most recent maximum, which saw him hit a brilliant shot to land on black from pink in baulk. “It’s always a good feeling when that happens.”I’ve done well in this event before, and it’s good preparation for the Welsh Open and, hopefully, the Players’ Championship. That was the goal of coming down here: to get some match practice.”
