As unlikely as it seemed in the summer when Brock Purdy was rehabbing from major elbow surgery, and as absurd as it would have sounded last season when Purdy was still a Mr. Despite taking over as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, he is making a strong case for NFL MVP.
Purdy’s numbers for a potential No. 1 seed will be difficult for voters to ignore at some point. Even if there are doubts about Purdy’s true talent level and whether his production is due to the players around him or Kyle Shanahan’s play-calling, the production has to be significant. And this season, Purdy has been as productive as any quarterback in the NFL.
Purdy’s outstanding season continued with a 45-29 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. He gained 242 yards and four touchdowns on 25 attempts, completing 16 of them.
Purdy has had an incredibly efficient season, with excellent per-play analytics and an NFL-leading passer rating. He’s doing it for an NFL team that is widely regarded as the best. That is typically the MVP formula.

Purdy’s main MVP competition heading into Week 15 was Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who had a rough day in a loss to the Buffalo Bills. Prescott did not pass for 100 yards until late in the fourth quarter, when the Cowboys trailed 31-3. That’s excellent timing for Purdy.
