Mark Sears and Labaron Philon Withdraw from 2025 NBA Draft to Return to Alabama: Nate Oats Says “It’s a Big Win for the Program”
In a major offseason development for Alabama basketball, star guard Mark Sears and top freshman Labaron Philon have officially withdrawn from the 2025 NBA Draft and announced their return to the Crimson Tide for the upcoming season. Head coach Nate Oats confirmed the decision with excitement, calling their return a “massive boost” for the team’s championship aspirations.
Both players had entered the draft process to test the waters, but after careful evaluation and feedback from NBA scouts, they’ve opted to return to Tuscaloosa — much to the delight of Crimson Tide fans and staff alike.
“Getting Mark and Labaron back is a big win for the program,” Oats said in a statement. “These are two incredibly talented guys who have the chance to take us even further next season. Their leadership and hunger to win make a huge difference.”
Mark Sears, the veteran playmaker and heart of Alabama’s backcourt, was instrumental in the team’s deep tournament run last season. Known for his scoring touch, clutch performances, and floor leadership, Sears averaged over 17 points per game and was widely considered one of the most reliable guards in the SEC.
“He’s the anchor,” Oats said. “Mark knows our system, he thrives in it, and his return gives us a proven scorer and leader in big moments.”
Labaron Philon, the electrifying freshman guard and former five-star recruit, showed flashes of elite potential in his first season. With a quick first step, high basketball IQ, and explosive finishing ability, Philon impressed scouts during pre-draft workouts — but ultimately chose development and winning in college over an early jump to the pros.
“Labaron is a future NBA player, no doubt,” said Oats. “But he’s committed to getting better, and he believes in what we’re building here at Alabama. That says a lot about his character.”
The return of Sears and Philon adds significant depth and continuity to an Alabama roster that is shaping up as one of the strongest in the country. With key pieces back and new recruits on the way, expectations will be sky-high for the Crimson Tide heading into the 2025–26 season.
“This is the kind of decision that sets a tone,” Oats concluded. “These guys came back because they believe we have something special. And so do I.”
With two of its brightest stars back in the fold, Alabama basketball isn’t just reloading — it’s ready to make a serious run at a national title.
