cording to reporter Jonathan Johnson, Chelsea could be ready to give Al-Ittihad striker Karim Benzema a chance if he decides to return to Europe during the January transfer window.
Last summer, the French made a shocking decision to leave Real Madrid for the professional league of Saudi Arabia. He signed a big-money deal with the reigning champions but is now considering a move back to Europe.
Chelsea are among admirers of the former Lyon graduate and speaking to Caught Offside, Johnson said the Blues could be willing to give Benzema a chance as he still has the ability to hit the net.
However, the French football expert added that a return to Lyon could be a more realistic option for the 36-year-old, saying: “I’m not sure if Benzema is still at the same level at his age as we saw him at Real – Madrid.”
“His injuries hit there too and that hasn’t changed, but of course he still has the quality that I imagine big names like Chelsea would be willing to give him a chance.”
“He has to choose his next move wisely and that’s why I think a return to Lyon could be something to watch out for – he could be a real talisman there… I wouldn’t be surprised if he went back to Europe. in the coming weeks.”
World Class Striker
Benzema has been one of the best strikers in the world for years. He was in exemplary form for Madrid last season, scoring 31 goals and has added 12 more since his move to the Middle East. The experienced star is now considering a return to European football and a loan move could be on the cards this winter.
Chelsea lack a real goalscorer in their squad. They have missed their biggest chances at the top level this campaign and bringing in a striker with Benzema’s pedigree would improve their chances of scoring regularly. Benzema may also be tempted to test himself in a new league before taking time out from his career.
A loan switch could require him to accept a staggering £86 million a year pay cut from the Saudi. Al-Ittihad must also be convinced to let go of their main striker. The Saudi side will surely demand a loan fee to part with the Frenchman, who remains one of the game’s best goalscorers..
