The Carolina Panthers have cast a wide net in their head coaching search, and it appears the franchise has some level of interest in Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson despite the team’s recent struggles.
Carolina is expected to interview Johnson for their head coaching gig, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Johnson is not eligible to interview with the Panthers until Jan. 18, per The Athletic’s Brooks Kubena. If the Eagles are still in the playoffs at that point, he’ll only be able to interview with the franchise virtually.
Johnson is in his first season as Philadelphia’s offensive coordinator. He served as the team’s quarterbacks coach from 2021-2022 before taking over as the franchise’s offensive play-caller following Shane Steichen’s departure to become head coach of the Indianapolis Colts.
The Philadelphia offense also averaged 225.5 passing yards, 128.8 rushing yards and 25.5 points per game this year.
Johnson is typically lauded for his work with quarterback Jalen Hurts, who has thrived as a passer in each of the last two seasons following a rather slow start to his career. Over the last two seasons, he has thrown for 7,559 yards and 45 touchdowns against 21 interceptions in 32 games.
