If Peters or Wilks departs, the Niners have proven in recent years that they are adept at finding highly capable replacements.
Success carries a price, and for the Niners that means risking the loss of key people. Assistant GM Adam Peters will interview with Washington tonight, and the LA Chargers asked permission to talk to defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
If Peters or Wilks departs, the Niners have proven in recent years that they are adept at finding highly capable replacements.
Will Adam Peters go to Washington?
New Washington owner Josh Harris just showed he can think outside the box by hiring former Warriors GM Bob Myers. Myers was a critical choice to build the Warriors’ dynasty, and Harris sees Myers’ value in decision-making and culture-building.
Washington’s franchise can rise. A proven fan base in a bad place and the team’s shot gets a complete reboot and a possible return to the standings.
This is a great show for Peters, help build the NFL’s next powerhouse.
Washington starts over, they choose a new team name, a new GM and head coach, a new quarterback with the second overall pick in the draft, and start in a new stadium, all representing a new direction.
Washington is also rumored to be eyeing Baltimore director of player personnel Joe Hortiz for the GM job. He has been with the Ravens for 25 years. Baltimore defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald is rumored to be a head coaching candidate.
The Raiders and Chargers are also interested in Peters, but staying with the Niners or going to Washington are better options. I think the fans and media underestimate the work in Washington, the ownership has changed and the future is bright in DC. Staying with the Niners is tempting, but even if Peters is named GM, Kyle Shanahan will have the final say on personnel. It can make a difference.
Is Steve Wilks Leaving? And if he does, who will the Niners bring in?
The Chargers and#039; the interest, unfortunately, appears to be related to checking the Rooney Rule box, which requires teams to interview minority head coaching candidates. After the Brandon Staley debacle, I expect Chargers owner Dean Spanos to hire a big name so he can say don’t blame me. This is fueling rumors about Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick.
While the Chargers may not be a legitimate option, other jobs could be real options for Wilks to provide leadership and stability to a franchise lacking both.
If Wilks stays, outside candidates could include Brian Flores, an innovator who excelled in Minnesota this year and has previous head coaching experience in Miami.
How worried should the Niners be about Jake Moody?
They must be worried. I think investing in a third round pick will lock them into Moody this year. They expect Moody to be a kicker and cap cheat for years to come. A potential replacement can disrupt this. The fans say bad, but so does Shanahan. He already said no, we are not bringing anyone.
Shanahan has a bad habit of trying to count on things, and Moody is the latest example. Moody is a reliable kicker who bolsters the pick and makes the cap strategy work. Fans fear Shanahanand’s desire could derail a championship.
Maybe Shanahan will change his tune if Moody hits two more in the first playoff game, but anything other than that, and Moody isn’t taking anyone.
I have no knowledge of prop mechanics, but I can point to the results and ask why so few Moody’s props went off center? Why does every shot seem to hug the post?
A former kicker on Twitter said Moody’s plantar shin was the problem, but didn’t explain what to do about it. The Niners have two weeks to work on Moody’s mechanics and getting the ball up the middle. One time.
Any takeaways from the Rams game?
Pair. Isaiah Oliver had his best game of the year, albeit against linebackers, and Logan Ryan did a nice job in run support. Both must step up if Ji’Ayir Brown can’t go or falter in the first playoff game.
Darrell Luter also had a good game and could be a necessary rotation player in the playoffs because he has quick receiver speed and size to help against the run.
Other players have shown why they are not playing.
Even though Ronnie Bell had a touchdown, I wonder if the Niners can find a slot receiver in the draft to give them an impact triple. Some drafts have the Niners WR going first. I doubt it, but a wide receiver is probably high value for nine draft picks in the first three rounds, especially if the player is also a punt returner..
