After Detroit came dangerously close to ending a record losing skid in their away game against the Boston Celtics on Thursday, American record producer Metro Boomin delivered it to the hurting Pistons supporters.
Before faltering late in the game and losing 128-122 in overtime, the Pistons, who had lost 27 straight games coming into the match, appeared to be in good position to avoid setting an all-time league record of 28 straight losses.
As of early 2015–16, they are tied for the record for the most straight losses, which was set by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2014–15 and 2015–16. Metro Boomin expressed his opinions about Detroit’s nearly disastrous attempt on X (previously Twitter):
“Ni**as believed they would get wings.”
The Pistons’ 28-game losing run is the longest in league history during an NBA season.
Detroit got out to a strong start in the game, building a 19-point lead (66–47). But Boston began to rally at the beginning of the second half, and by the end of the third canto, they were tied at 82 all.
Both sides battled back and forth in the fourth, ending in a 108-108 tie as regulation time ran out.
The sides battled it out throughout the extra period, and with 2:13 left, Jrue Holiday’s and-1 play gave the Celtics a 116-115 advantage. From then on, they held onto the lead. The Pistons’ record was now 2-29 after the loss.
Detroit’s top scorer, Cade Cunningham, finished with 31 points and nine assists. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 17 points, and Jaden Ivey scored 22. On Saturday, the Pistons will try to end their all-time losing skid when they play the Toronto Raptors at home.
Despite the team’s 28th straight loss, Pistons coach Williams is happy of the players’ efforts.
Coach Monty Williams of the Detroit Pistons is pleased with his team’s efforts as they attempt to avoid losing to the Boston Celtics for the 28th time in a row on Thursday. They had Boston work hard for the victory before ultimately losing in overtime.
Williams, who is in his first season as Detroit’s coach, admitted in the press conference following the game that the loss hurt, but that his players’ effort can be built upon to end the team’s protracted losing streak.
According to the Associated Press, the Motor City team coach stated:
“I’m incredibly proud of the group and what they’ve accomplished.” They simply keep bringing up everything they’ve heard about our team. I’m sure it will be worthwhile.
He continued, saying:
“I ache for them, even as much as they hurt right now. However, I assured them that we would win more than one game if we played with that level of tenacity and execution (without the turnovers). We are going to assemble something.
Detroit is currently dead last in the NBA with a 2-29 record.
