It Wasn’t Easy’: Aday Mara Opens Up About Leaving UCLA for Michigan…read more…..
April 20, 2025 — Aday Mara, the towering 7-foot-3 center who turned heads during his freshman season at UCLA, is heading to Michigan—and he’s now shedding light on the emotional decision behind his transfer.
In his first public comments since announcing the move, Mara admitted that leaving UCLA was anything but simple. “It was a hard decision,” he said. “I have nothing but love for UCLA, my teammates, and the fans. But I had to think about what was best for me and my future.”
The Rising Star’s Fresh Start
Mara, a native of Spain, came to Westwood as one of the most highly touted international prospects in recent memory. His size, vision, and passing ability made him an instant fan favorite and a crucial part of the Bruins’ lineup. During the 2024–25 season, he averaged 7.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game—numbers that only scratched the surface of his upside.
But as UCLA underwent coaching changes and the program began to shift direction, Mara started evaluating his long-term fit.
“I just felt like I needed a new environment to grow both as a player and a person,” he said. “Michigan offered that opportunity, and it felt like the right place to take the next step.”
Why Michigan?
The Wolverines, under newly energized leadership, were quick to show interest in Mara once he entered the portal. Their pitch focused on developing his all-around game, increasing his offensive role, and offering him a system that suits his unique skill set.
“They showed me how I could fit into their plans right away,” Mara said. “They believe in me and want to help me expand my game.”
Michigan is expected to lean heavily on Mara in the 2025–26 season, as they rebuild their roster and aim to climb back into Big Ten contention.
UCLA’s Loss, Michigan’s Gain
Mara’s departure is a significant blow for UCLA, which was hoping to retain its young core for another season. However, the Bruins remain supportive of his decision.
“I’m forever thankful for everything UCLA gave me,” Mara emphasized. “It will always be a special place in my heart.”
For Michigan fans, his arrival signals a new era—one filled with size, skill, and excitement in the paint.
Looking Ahead
With a fresh start in Ann Arbor, Aday Mara is ready to take his game to the next level. And though the decision to leave UCLA came with heavy emotions, he’s confident it was the right move.
“Sometimes growth means making tough choices,” he said. “I’m excited about what’s ahead.”
Stay tuned as Mara gears up for his first season in maize and blue—and prepares to make a big impact in the Big Ten.
