Jalen Hurts was the overwhelming favorite to win the MVP Award a little more than a month ago.
He’s no longer even a Pro Bowler.
Hurts was a notable omission from the NFL Pro Bowl rosters released on Wednesday night, after making it in 2022. The three quarterbacks selected from the NFC were 49ers starter Brock Purdy, Cowboys Dak Prescott, and Rams Matthew Stafford.
Hurts is a first-round pick, so it’s possible (even likely?) that he’ll make the Pro Bowl in 2023.
Hurts leads all NFL quarterbacks in total touchdowns this season with a franchise-record 38. Only Bills quarterback Josh Allen has more this season. Allen was also notably absent from the AFC roster this season.
In a total of 16 games
Hurts: (11-5), 66.1%, 3,803 yards, 23 touchdowns, 14 interceptions; 601 rushing yards, 15 touchdowns
Purdy: (12-4), 69.4%, 4,280 yards, 31 touchdowns, 11 interceptions; 144 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns.
Prescott (11-5), 68.4%, 4,237 yards, 32 touchdowns, 8 interceptions; 242 yards, 2 touchdowns
Stafford (9-6), 62.6%, 3,965 yards, 24 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, 65 rushing yards
It’s difficult to argue that Hurts deserves a Pro Bowl spot over Purdy or Prescott, but he has better overall numbers than Stafford when rushing stats are included. Furthermore, the Eagles have a better record than the Rams. However, Hurts’ turnovers may have kept him out.
While Hurts was not selected for the Pro Bowl, six of his teammates were: Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson, Landon Dickerson, A.J. Brown, D’Andre Swift, and others.
Mr. Haason Reddick.
Aside from Hurts, the Eagles have several alternates, including kicker Jake Elliott (1st), cornerback Darius Slay (1st), return specialist Britain Covey (2nd), defensive end Josh Sweat (2nd), tackle Jordan Mailata (3rd), tight end Dallas Goedert (4th), and guard Cam Jurgens (5th).
The Cowboys’ Brandon Aubrey is the kicker ahead of Elliott. DaRon Bland, Charvarius Ward, Jaylon Johnson, and Devon Witherspoon are the corners ahead of Slay.
