San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to the media on Friday, talking about last Monday night’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens, where quarterback Brock Purdy threw four interceptions. When asked about Purdy’s reaction to the bad outing, Shanhan answered the question directly from a member of the media, Mike Florio of NBC Sports.
“Yeah, he was great,” Shanahan said. “I don’t mind, but I’m so tired of talking about the interceptions in the last game, but it was like every week, every game. He takes each game at a time and tries to do his best.
There’s no doubt that Shanahan cares more about reacting to gears rather than the choices of the game itself. He admires Purdyand’s attitude in hindsight, although even with the head coach he mentions how the quarterback can be “too hard on himself.“
“I just think it’s him,” Shanahan said. – This is how he is when I lead him. He says what he thinks. I say what I think. He is a very humble man but very competitive. It’s just Brock. That’s how I see him talking to the people here. He always takes responsibility. He doesn’t do it just because he knows how to talk to the media. That’s how he sees things. He always looks inside first and really feels it. Sometimes I think he’s too hard on himself in that regard. Not too hard on myself, that’s just the way he is. But it’s great that he never shows any disappointment. I think he has it pretty easy because I don’t think he has a lot of frustration with other people. I think he’s always thinking about what could be done better.
While it cannot be argued that this was a terrible performance by Purdy, it is out of character as he has had an effective season thus far, even to the point of being considered an MVP candidate. So far this season, Purdy has thrown for 4,050 yards, 29 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Shanahan says it’s better for a player to be hard on himself than easy
Shanahan says Purdy is “a humble guy but extremely competitive,” among other qualities. He even said that he would rather be a player who is hard on himself than easy on himself.
“He is a very humble man but very competitive. That and only Brock... Heand always cares. He doesn’t do it just because he knows how to talk to the media and how he approaches things,” Shanahan said. “He always looks inside first and he really feels that way. I think he’s always thinking about what could be done better. You and I would rather someone be a little hard on us than take it easy.“
Despite the loss, the 49ers are 11-4, tied for the best record in the NFC with the Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions. The battle for the top seed in the conference is just getting started. San Francisco’s final two games are Sunday against the Washington Commanders and next week against the NFC West rival Los Angeles Rams..
