Kyle Shanahan provides commentary on DL Sebastian Joseph-Day’s premiere.

It’s not common for a team to add a starter this late in the season. But that’s exactly what the San Francisco 49ers did last week when they signed defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day. He could make his 49ers debut against the Commanders, which Kyle Shanahan speculated about during his conference call on Monday.

This is what he thought of Joseph-Dayand’s performance. “It was good to get him out. We definitely liked the guy and we liked the player. We are asking him to do completely different things. The style he played with in two splits and his attitude and stuff is the opposite of what we do. andquot;I really gave him half a practice where he just went to work on a few things at full speed for two periods and then went out and made those 11 plays.

I was very impressed with him. He was ready to go, did everything we asked. I bet he gets a little more playing time next week. Joseph-Day should see a lot of work in the season finale against the Rams. The 49ers likely won’t play their starters a full game, so it’s a great opportunity for Joseph-Day to get used to his new team. His addition comes at a time when the 49ers have some uncertainty regarding the future of Arik Armstead. In the event that Armstead returns in limited numbers, Joseph-Day could somehow fill the rest of the reps.
