NBA legend Larry Bird has never been one to sugarcoat his opinions, and when asked about the Los Angeles Lakers’ playoff chances, he made it clear: with Luka Dončić in the mix, the Lakers are a serious threat to win the Western Conference.
“Anthony Davis was in LeBron’s way because LeBron’s really a four now, and that’s the position that Anthony Davis wanted to play—let’s just make that clear,” Bird explained. “You have a top-five player that can get it from anywhere, and he’s a matchup nightmare.”
The addition of Luka Dončić has transformed the Lakers into a more dynamic and unpredictable offensive unit. Bird, who understands the importance of spacing and matchups, sees Dončić as the key to unlocking the Lakers’ full potential.
Why the Lakers Can Beat the Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder have been one of the West’s best teams, led by rising superstar Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a deep supporting cast, and an elite defensive scheme. However, Bird believes that with Dončić and LeBron operating together, the Lakers have the perfect counter.
- Luka’s Playmaking – Dončić’s ability to control the tempo and create shots for himself and his teammates makes him nearly impossible to guard. Against a young Thunder team, his experience and skillset could expose their defensive weaknesses.
- LeBron at the Four – With Anthony Davis moving out of the way, LeBron James can now fully embrace the power forward role. This allows him to be a dominant interior presence while still facilitating offense at a high level.
- Matchup Nightmare – As Bird pointed out, Dončić is one of the toughest matchups in the league. His size, skill, and court vision allow him to exploit any defensive scheme, making it difficult for even the Thunder’s best defenders to contain him.
