Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher was left with egg on his face after the Liverpool legend’s salty dig about Manchester United epically backfired on him.

United mounted a sensational second-half comeback to beat Aston Villa 3-2 after Unai Emery’s men were leading 2-0 at Old Trafford on Tuesday evening.

Alejandro Garnacho spearheaded United’s fight back against Villa after the break and produced a Man of the Match-winning performance in the Boxing Day clash.

The 19-year-old United winger scored a stunning brace to pull his side back into the contest before under-pressure Rasmus Hojlund slammed home the winner for United.

An emphatic Hojlund finally broke his Premier League goalscoring drought, with the United striker receiving messages from his fellow teammates after the match.

Erik ten Hag, who rallied his men at half-time, was a relieved man on the night and signed off United’s final home match of 2023 with all three Premier League points.

However, Carragher was left red-faced after he took a cheeky swipe at United during the match against Villa and Red Devils fans love how poorly his message has aged.

Carragher’s tweet about United backfires
United surprised even their harshest critics when they travelled to Anfield earlier this month and secured a hard-fought Premier League point against Liverpool.

Virgil van Dijk blasted United for their performance in the 0-0 draw, with United legend Roy Keane hitting back in brutal fashion at the Liverpool captain.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp also moaned about the scoreline against United, despite the Red Devils producing a solid display in the clash at Anfield.

Carragher, much like Klopp and Van Dijk, was salty about the scoreline from the Liverpool match against United and took aim at the Red Devils on social media.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, the former Liverpool defender couldn’t resist the opportunity to fire a brutal dig when United were 2-0 down against Villa.

“Liverpool drawing at home to Man Utd is their worst result of the season,” he tweeted.

Unfortunately for Carragher — and fortunately for United fans — the Sky Sports pundit’s tweet backfired and Red Devils supporters wasted no time in reminding him.

Ten Hag is happy with United’s result vs Villa
The pressure on Ten Hag would have intensified with a loss against Villa, with the Red Devils suffering eight Premier League defeats under the Dutchman this season.

However, United responded in the exact way that fans had hoped after they superbly rallied back and were much more clinical in the final third against Villa.

Ten Hag’s men are currently sixth in the Premier League table and are five points adrift from fourth-place Tottenham, though Spurs have a match in hand over United.

The Red Devils will finish off 2023 with a trip to City Ground on Saturday for their Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest.

Speaking after the Villa match, Ten Hag told Amazon Prime Video: “I am so happy that the strikers scored today because that is what we needed.

“I know they are capable of that, Rasmus and [Marcus] Rashford and Garnacho.

“They are all good finishers and we have more than that, too. They have to show it every game.

“Be accountable, believe in yourself and be ready to take the chance and score a goal.”
