Malachi Moreno Opens Up on Choosing Kentucky Over Auburn: ‘Coach Pope is Who I’ve Needed to Play For’
Top-ranked center Malachi Moreno, one of the most sought-after recruits in the 2025 class, has officially committed to the University of Kentucky, choosing the Wildcats over Auburn University in what many saw as a tough decision. However, for Moreno, the choice was clear, and it came down to one major factor: his faith and trust in Coach Mark Pope.
“I’m a very spiritual person, and since I was 16 years old, I’ve just felt a pull towards Coach Pope,” Moreno said. “He is who I’ve needed to play for and who is gonna help me become the best player and person that I could be.”
A Longstanding Connection
Moreno, a 6-foot-11 standout from Georgetown, Kentucky, has been on Kentucky’s radar for years, and the relationship between him and Coach Pope played a pivotal role in his final decision. While Auburn made a strong push and presented an appealing program under Bruce Pearl, Moreno felt that his heart was always leading him toward the Wildcats.
“Coach Pearl and Auburn have a great program, and I respect everything they’ve built,” Moreno acknowledged. “But Kentucky is home, and there’s just something special about what Coach Pope is doing. His vision for me and this team was something I couldn’t turn down.”
A Key Piece for Kentucky’s Future
With Kentucky looking to rebuild under Pope after the departure of John Calipari, landing a dominant frontcourt player like Moreno is a massive win for the Wildcats. Known for his elite rim protection, rebounding ability, and offensive versatility, Moreno is expected to be a key piece in Kentucky’s future success.
“The fans, the history, the opportunity to play in Rupp Arena—it all played a role in my decision,” Moreno said. “But ultimately, it came down to faith and trust. Coach Pope has been there for me since the start, and I know he’s going to push me to reach my full potential.”
What’s Next for Moreno?
With his commitment locked in, Moreno is now focusing on finishing his high school career strong before arriving in Lexington. Kentucky fans are already buzzing about the impact he could have on the program, especially given his two-way dominance in the paint.
As Kentucky continues to build under Mark Pope, adding a recruit with Moreno’s size, skill, and mentality could be the foundation for future success. And for Moreno, the decision wasn’t just about basketball—it was about playing for a coach who he believes will shape him into the best version of himself.
“I just know in my heart that this is where I’m supposed to be,” Moreno said. “Kentucky is home.”
