Netflix Set to Release Documentary on Legendary Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski in 2025
Durham, NC — Netflix has announced the upcoming release of a major sports documentary that will chronicle the life and legacy of legendary Duke University basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski, better known as Coach K. The film, titled “K: The Legacy of a Leader,” is scheduled to premiere globally in 2025, marking the first comprehensive cinematic tribute to the man who defined an era of college basketball.
Mike Krzyzewski, who led the Duke Blue Devils from 1980 until his retirement in 2022, is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in basketball history. Over the course of four decades, Coach K built a dynasty rooted in discipline, loyalty, and an uncompromising commitment to excellence. Under his leadership, Duke captured five NCAA championships, made 13 Final Four appearances, and produced countless NBA stars.
“Coach K is a symbol of leadership, not just in basketball but in life,” said Netflix’s Vice President of Sports Content, Erin Carter. “His story is about more than wins and trophies. It’s about shaping young men, building a program from the ground up, and standing for something bigger than the game.”
The documentary will include rare behind-the-scenes footage from Duke’s most iconic seasons, along with exclusive interviews featuring Coach K himself, his former players, fellow coaches, and key figures in college basketball history. Fans can expect appearances from stars like Grant Hill, Christian Laettner, Kyrie Irving, Jayson Tatum, and Shane Battier, as well as from coaching peers such as Tom Izzo, Roy Williams, and the late Dean Smith.
In addition to his legendary coaching career at Duke, “K: The Legacy of a Leader” will explore Krzyzewski’s time at West Point, his leadership of Team USA to three Olympic gold medals, and his lasting influence on the game of basketball. The film also delves into his upbringing in Chicago, his service in the U.S. Army, and the values that shaped his coaching philosophy—honor, discipline, and integrity.
Krzyzewski’s career total of 1,202 wins remains the most in NCAA Division I men’s basketball history, and his impact extends far beyond the stat sheet. The documentary aims to capture his unique blend of passion, toughness, and mentorship that made him beloved by players and respected by rivals.
“Coach K changed the culture of Duke basketball and left an imprint on every player who walked through that locker room,” said director Ava DuVernay, who is helming the project. “This is a story of greatness built over time, through sacrifice and vision.”
“K: The Legacy of a Leader” will premiere on Netflix in spring 2025, just ahead of March Madness—a fitting tribute to a man who owned the tournament for decades.
