Crystal Palace want to complete a move for Adam Wharton this month as they fear Newcastle United will hijack the deal in the summer.
According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace are looking to sign central midfielder Adam Wharton this month. The Eagles fear other rivals, notably Newcastle United, will enter the race in the summer as they look to sign the 19-year-old Tottenham target.
Crystal Palace fear over Adam Wharton deal
Crystal Palace fans are not in a happy mood due to the club’s recent team performances and even raised a big flag after the loss to Arsenal. The Eagles are looking to ensure a solid finish to the season and are prepared to spend on critical players this winter.
With the transfer window just days away from closing, they are looking to sign 19-year-old Adam Wharton. Blackburn have already rejected an offer of around £18.5m from Palace as they were expected to table a new offer that could exceed £20m.
Wharton impressed at Blackburn and even signed a new five-year deal last month, putting the Championship in a strong position. While Palace want to sign the deal now, they fear rivals could hijack the deal if it extends until next summer.
Hodgson already lost key star Cheick Doucoure at the start of the season and have been lacking in midfield ever since. The inclusion of 19-year-old Wharton could help Palace in a big way in the second half of the season. However, they are seriously concerned about a takeover, especially with a report claiming Newcastle United are interested.
Newcastle United want to sign Wharton.
Newcastle United are patiently waiting for the transfer window to close and are likely to start planning their next move before the summer. They have Wharton’s list of potential midfielders to sign in the next window, but hopefully he won’t be joining Palace in the coming days.
Tottenham were also keen but have since moved on, although if Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg leaves they could even make a late bid to test Blackburn. That’s why Palace are desperate to seal a deal now and hope their expected new offer will seal the move.
Wharton was a good performer for Blackburn and he has a big decision to leave the club and join Palace. If not, he could attract more offers in the summer but will have less bargaining power over the personal deal he currently receives at Selhurst Park..
