Ronnie O’Sullivan praised the Welsh Open as a great tournament when he explained his decision not to take part in this year’s show number 039.
The 48-year-old major league champion won the Masters earlier this year and was one of the favorites for the ongoing Welsh event, but is now out of contention.
O’Sullivan was in studio at the start of the tournament in the picturesque seaside town of Llandudno and explained why he did not want to compete with other players.
Top players rarely miss tournaments, and with O’Sullivan injury free, his decision certainly raised eyebrows.
The outspoken star – who previously admitted he was considering giving up snooker after so many years of dominance – explained he wants to play as little as possible these days.
“I think it’s a great tournament and a great venue, it’s really nice to be on the coast, it’s always a great week and I think everyone loves coming to this tournament” he told Euro Sport.
“For me, the most important thing is to get away from playing as little as possible and that suits me, and I just try to stay ranked, take my time and enjoy myself”
“I don’t want to be on the treadmill every week” he added.
O’Sullivan posted a further explanation on his X account when he posted at the start of the Welsh Open last week: “Morning boys just wanted to let you know that I and I decided I could. not playing in Llandudno next week. It’s hard to explain, but over the years I’ve sometimes suffered from stage fright caused by anxiety”
“It’s not something I can predict or control, but I try to control it as best I can”
“sorry to everyone who bought a ticket but I just can’t figure out when the urge will come and I think this is the best for me right now.
“I still want to participate in the tournament, so I am working with Eurosport and I hope to see you all there”
