Newsnow; Stephen Hendry pro snooker tour return ends in another defeat

Stephen Hendry made a rare appearance at the World Snooker Tour Barokleyers.

The legendary seven-time world champion still has the opportunity to compete professionally behind a professional card.

But Hendry has rarely been on the track in recent seasons.

It was indeed only the fifth tournament of the 2023/24 campaign for the 55-year-old and marked his first outing since October.

Unfortunately for many of his fans, Hendry’s encounter with compatriot Ross Muir ended in similar fashion to his previous four clashes this season.

Four close frames were shared early in the match, but Muir pulled away late in the contest to win 4-2.

You have to go all the way back to the 2021 English Open to win Hendry’s last Main Event match.

The former world number one hopes to play in front of big nations again, but openly admits that he no longer does the training necessary to succeed at this level.

Hendry’s last two-year invitation card expires in May, and while it is widely expected that he will be offered another, it will be interesting to see if he accepts or not.

Elsewhere on the Welsh Open qualifying day, Scottish Open champion Gary Wilson and former world champion Graeme Dott won.

Wilson cruised to a 4-1 victory over Mark Davis, while Dott ended up in a close encounter with Pang Junxu.

Si Jiahui, last year’s World Cup semi-finalist, knocked out former Welsh Open champion Stephen Maguire.

Hossein Vafaei, Chris Wakelin and Matthew Stevens are among others to make it to next month’s Llandudno venue.

The first stages of the Welsh Open continue until Saturday at the Barnsley Metrodome.

The top 16, including reigning champion Robert Milkins and world champion Luca Brecel, missed the 128th round.
