Second year one of the 49ers’ coordinators has been asked to interview for an open head coaching job.
This is becoming an annual trend now.
The Los Angeles Chargers have asked the San Francisco 49ers to interview defensive coordinator Steve Wilks for their head coaching position, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports.
In the second year, the 49ers coordinator is asked to interview to become the head coach. That’s basically the expectation for the 49ers right now. They are the main coaching factory. Wilks would join former 49ers coordinators Robert Saleh, Mike McDaniel and DeMeco Ryans to interview and become the head coach.
I doubt Wilks won’t accept head coaching offers though. He certainly interviews like any coordinator/coach, but I think if the Chargers or any other team offered him the job, he would turn it down. Wilks has moved so much in his career over the last eight years. Maybe he just wants some continuity for a while and continues to build his inventory.
NFL teams can be shady too. We all know the Chargers use Wilks to enforce the Rooney Rule. Either way, Wilks deserves to be nominated, but I have a feeling he’ll stick with the 49ers for at least another year, similar to how Ryans did two years ago as defensive coordinator.
It was the year of Wilks. He did not become 49ers’ a scapegoat; three-game losing streak earlier this season and defensive issues, turning it and now a possible head coaching candidate for the Chargers. It just goes to show what a huge overreaction and injustice it was to blame Wilks alone for all these failures..
