Arizona Lands First 2027 Commitment in Texas Safety Jalani Culpepper
The Arizona Wildcats have officially begun building their 2027 recruiting class, and they didn’t have to look far beyond their new home in the Big 12 to find their first piece. Three-star safety Jalani Culpepper from Georgetown, Texas, committed to Arizona in October 2025, becoming the program’s first pledge for the 2027 cycle.
**Why Culpepper Chose Arizona**
Culpepper, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound defensive back from East View High School, selected the Wildcats over offers from SMU, Houston, USF, Florida State, Colorado, Indiana, Michigan State, and Texas Tech. His decision came after multiple visits to Tucson, where he built a strong connection with head coach Brent Brennan and his staff.
“Arizona has always been one of my favorite schools I have visited up there numerous times and have been continuing to grow my connection with the coaching staff there,” Culpepper told Arizona On SI. “It is a place I would love to call home and I would love to be apart of what they are building”.
The Texas native also expressed confidence that his playing style fits defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales’s system perfectly—an aggressive, physical approach that seeks contact and plays with attitude.
**What Culpepper Brings to the Wildcats**
Culpepper is described as a hard-hitting safety who “plays like a linebacker, seeking contact and hitting with a heavy pop”. Despite his 5-foot-10 frame, he possesses a quick, fluid lower body and the ability to flip his hips to stay with receivers in coverage.
Through the first part of his junior season, Culpepper recorded 31 tackles, an interception, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles. Over his two-year varsity career, he has amassed 62 tackles, two interceptions, six pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.
According to Rivals industry rankings, Culpepper is currently rated as the No. 734 overall player in the 2027 class, the No. 79 safety prospect, and the No. 94 recruit from Texas.
**The Texas Pipeline Continues**
Culpepper’s commitment is the latest evidence of Arizona’s aggressive recruiting strategy in the Lone Star State—a focus that has intensified since the Wildcats joined the Big 12. Arizona’s 2025 recruiting class featured nine players from Texas, the most since 2005. The Wildcats currently have five Texas players committed for 2026.
Brennan and his staff have already extended offers to several other 2027 Texas prospects, including running backs Correll Buckhalter Jr. (Colleyville) and Jayshon Gibson (North Richland Hills), as well as offensive lineman Mason Joshua from Forney.
**Building the 2027 Class**
Culpepper is not the only 2027 commit the Wildcats have secured. In November 2025, three-star wide receiver Trey Smith from Gilbert, Arizona, joined Culpepper as the second member of the class. Smith, a 6-foot, 165-pound Williams Field High School product, chose the Wildcats over Arizona State, Iowa, Miami, Iowa State, and Kansas State.
The Wildcats are also in the mix for several other top 2027 targets, including:
– **Brice McCurdy**: A three-star quarterback from Waco, Texas, who has Arizona in his top six along with Baylor, TCU, Cincinnati, Duke, and UCF
– **Davon Smith**: A talented linebacker from Houston who has scheduled an official visit to Arizona for June 5-7
– **Mason Joshua**: A three-star offensive lineman from Forney, Texas, who will officially visit Tucson May 29-31
**The Brennan Blueprint**
Head coach Brent Brennan, entering his third season at Arizona in 2026, has prioritized recruiting Texas since the program’s transition to the Big 12. With a 2026 class that currently ranks No. 41 nationally and features 20 commits, the Wildcats are building momentum on the trail.
Culpepper’s early commitment gives Arizona a foundation for the 2027 cycle and sends a message that the Wildcats intend to compete for top talent in the Lone Star State for years to come. As Culpepper himself put it, he wants to be part of “what they are building” in Tucson—and that building process is already well underway.
