On Wednesday afternoon, the New York Giants parted ways with defensive coordinator Wink Martindale. Martindale’s blitz-happy scheme hasn’t looked very good in terms of numbers in two seasons with the Giants, but it’s been the only consistent group under Brian Daboll.
Martindale has led the Giants’ defense to finish 17th and 26th in the league in points allowed since taking over. The defense has finished in the top ten in terms of passing touchdowns allowed, but has struggled against the run.
The defensive talent gap between New York and Philadelphia is significant. The Eagles’ secondary and defensive line both have Pro Bowl players.
It’s what piques Eagles fans’ interest in Martindale’s potential candidacy.
Since Jim Johnson died of cancer following the 2008 season, Philadelphia has been without a true blitzing coordinator. Since then, fans all over the world have been clamoring for someone to run the defense like they did during the glory years of the early 2000s.
Martindale may be the closest match.
The former Ravens defensive coordinator has led the league in tackles.
